Salmon Scrap Pet Food
Chansons de Le Chef et Le Chat
My Bundle of Love - Gene Austin
This song from 1925 is certainly not on my everyday playlist, but I think it is the tune that plays in my head when I think of my little sous chef. I think I speak for all animal owners.
Turn extra salmon into a treat for your pets!
Ingredients:
Salmon Extras - Remove any BONES
1 Carrot - Peeled
Consider adding:
For cats -
Broccoli
Asparagus
For dogs -
Green Beans
Peas
Instructions:
Simmer-
Simmer your salmon scraps and vegetable(s) in water for 1 hour or so
Strain-
Strain our liquid, SAVING IT. The salmon and vegetables should be cooked down into a mash. Feel free to squish out any excess liquid to make a dry pulp.
What to do with it? -
The liquid acts perfectly as a drizzle over their food, or you can freeze it for ice treats. My cat hates ice but my dogs love it.
For the salmon and carrot pulp, I like to substitute it for wet cat food or a light sprinkle over dog food.
They usually go crazy for it, but don’t worry if they don’t like it. Because it is just salmon and carrots, it has many uses for other things. Use it for a salmon burger, creamy salmon and asparagus pasta, a salad, Japanese Onigiri, or anything else that comes to mind.
It was funny when I first made this I did it specifically for my Sous Chef, Rémy, but he hates it. My dogs act like the doggy lord came down from above to bless them with a delicacy. I know that some cats do like it, my coworker’s cats go crazy for it. So don’t feel bad if it doesn’t work, I will continue to provide recipe attempts in hopes that we can feed our animals better, homemade food.
Another great recipe with salmon scraps is to dehydrate the salmon skin into crunch chips. This one Rémy DOES love. Just peel off the skin, place in an oven at a low temperature like 200-250, and just wait and wait. It works best on a sheet tray and a wire rack because they need airflow underneath too. You know it’s done when it doesn’t bend, it just snaps. These are tasty for Humans too, just add a pinch of salt. And make sure if you give them to your pets that you break them small and be gentle with them. They are sharp.
